front door

When anyone - kids, teachers, parents, staff - walked throught this door I wanted them to have fun.

There are two things that I see through the window of the the door in the above picture. The first is the screw-eyes head that for decades has been the logo of the show Paper Bag. A bit unusual for a classroom door, but kinda makes you smile.

The second item that catches my eye is in the upper left hand corner, hanging from the ceiling. It's a rubber chicken. Again, guaranteed to put you in a silly mood.

During the 10 years I taught in this classroom I was blessed with colleagues who were dedicated to teaching kids, and were fun to work with. One of the best things I found when teaching was, no matter what question you might have on any topic, science, literature, history, arts, athletics - there is someone in the building who knows the answer. I enjoyed the company of every faculty and staff member. I hope they had as much fun as I did.

Robert - a typical zen trumpet player

At the end of 8th grade, kids would autograph their music and tape it to the ceiling over where they sat. The ceiling had been completely covered with "artwork" until the Fire Marshall threatened to condemn the whole building if I didn't take some stuff down. Safety first, of course.
