Well, here is the way I had Room 101 set up for my very first day of school. I remember that the night before, the custodian helped me arrange the chairs in perfect semi-circles I haven't looked at this picture since before starting this project. It is very interesting to see what items lasted the entire 10 years.

The first thing I notice is the two bass drums. As previously noted, we did not use the larger "concert bass drum." We used the smaller one with the tighter "rock" sound. Deal with it. In the back corner is the drum set, congas and orchestra chimes. Also a few filing cabinets with music arrangements. I considered these an inefficient use of space and we banished them to Ms. Vasco's closet.

The beginning of my curation of wall art are the pages from a jazz calendar with Gerry Mulligan, Charles Mingus, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Ron Carter, Andre Watts, Duke Ellington, a washboard band and King Oliver's Band. The paper American flag on the white

board eventually migrated over to the bulletin board behind the teacher desk. Then there are a few posters from the sheet music industry that quickly disappeared.

The decrepit hand is there, in its original position on the ceiling holding a "Welcome Back" sign. The band room sign, left over from my predecessor is already in place. Fearless Leader peaks out from the right pa speaker.

While there is no computer at the podium yet, I do have a cart with the pa mixer and a cassette deck. There is not yet a projector and movie screen. The electric piano is in its spot just past the podium, ready for me to bang out some triads.

The thing in this picture that cracks me up the most … is the director's chair. There it is on my day one. Already crooked and leaning over like a drunken sailor. And that is before I put my 10,000 hours on it. All set up for the first day of school. Fun will be had …
